How to register & report a course (with and without insurance)

A huge benefit for becoming an ACA Certified Instructor is low cost liability insurance.  The ACA can achive this due to:

  • Rigorous vetting of instructors
  • The ACA is a national Standards Body for Paddlesports (Industry accepted practices)
  • Continuing education
  • Attention to course paperwork & reporting

The last bullet item is crucial, the ACA vets profesionals.  A key attribute of all professionals is attention to detail and proper diocumentation.  A key ACA website you should bookmark is: ACA Forms.  These forms change often and you must use the current versions of these forms.  On the plus side, the ACA continues to make course registration and reporting quite straight forward including web-based reporting and even mobile apps for classes not using ACA insurance.  Even if your employer provides liability insurance, there are some practical benefits to reporting your classes:

  • The ACA reports our instruction metrics to government & commercial organizations that provide the ACA grants.  These grants help pay for the ACA back office staff and help to keep our dues affordable.
  • Course reporting is required to maintain your Instructor Certification.
  • Those interested in pursuing Instructor Trainer status are evaluated on the quantity and quality of course reports.

Instructors can offer two types of courses:

  • Skills Classes - Pure training that meets the students needs/objectives.  Sample courses are provided by the discipline.
  • Assessments - A validation against a skills checklist provided by the discipline.
