In a serious incident like the open canoe pin at Sweet Falls (Chris Leonard), many paddlers were involved in the rescue. Sweet Falls at full release is very challenging to get out to and requires a great deal of resources. Safety both upstream and downstream are absolutely critical. The last thing you need is another boater running this rapid with ropes in the way or banging into the victim. Sending someone to notify the Dam Keeper to cut back on the water flow is very helpful as well as flagging down a train for evacuation. If you ever get a chance to attend a Chris Leonard Safety presentation, I highly recommend it. This is a perfect example of a rescue that required significant structure and leadership. By the way, it was a very successful rescue thanks to many highly skilled volunteer rescuers.
